Observeur du design 2018

Design Spot

In partnership with Agency for the Promotion of Industrial Creation (APCI), The Design Spot is pleased to welcome the Observeur du design 2018: a traveling exhibition that celebrates design and innovation.

A prize to honor outstanding design

Created by the APCI in 1999, the Observeur du Design is a prestigious French award for innovative products, services, devices or experiences that combine refinement and technical performance for the benefit of users. The international selection panel endorses projects proposed by companies, designers, agencies and design firms and awards a distinctive Star to the most outstanding of them. The breadth of the selection, the variety of proposals and several prestigious sponsors—the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the WDO (World Design Organization)—make the Observeur France’s most important design award.

For this year’s awards, the expert panel pre-selected 163 projects that demonstrate a responsible design approach, combining respect for users, for companies and for the environment. 35 of these received a star at a ceremony held at the Centre Pompidou on December 5, 2017. Design Spot Project Manager Vincent Créance was there to present the University Paris-Saclay Technology and Society Star.

Exhibition design by Patrick Jouin and Christophe Thélisson

Designers Patrick Jouin and Christophe Thélisson have created an engaging and dynamic scenography for the Design Spot exhibition. Transformation is the recurrent theme that unifies this year’s diverse design achievements, and the 35 “star” projects are arranged in several islands across the space according to type of transformation: uses, corporate, economic, technological, ecological and societal transformation.

Detailed content (text, drawings, photos and videos) accompanies each of the Stars on display so that the public can grasp the full scope of these proposals and understand what impressed the selection panel. The Stars are displayed on stands covered with Tarkett “IQ Natural Black” vinyl and raised on a silver plinth of Dibond aluminum composite panels, setting off each of the elements on show. These pedestals emerge from a carpet-tiled floor and are embellished in places with Dibond aluminum backing panels. The carpet is used vertically in three places to create alcoves for projects that feature interaction and sound. The exhibition as a whole appears independent, self-contained within the floor/wall of carpet that unfolds through space like a second skin.

Université Paris-Saclay, design and innovation

Innovation has been a central concern for Université Paris-Saclay since it was founded in 2014. The university contributes to the development of an innovation ecosystem in Paris-Saclay by linking the scientific excellence cluster to which it belongs with an industrial excellence cluster including large companies, SMEs and startups.

With the Design Spot, its design center, Université Paris-Saclay wants to promote the integration of the design discipline into research and innovation projects. The partnership with the APCI is an opportunity to publicly reiterate Université Paris-Saclay’s support for French innovation, as the star design achievements must be designed or marketed in France.
